Choosing the best baby’s and kid’s sun hats for the summer

Choosing the best baby's and kid’s sun hats for the summer

It’s time to order your new baby’s and kid’s sun hats. Spring is here and it’s time for both kids and parents to get outside and play. The beach is beckoning, the bush-walks are glorious and the creeks are crystal clear. In fact, all of these quintessentially Aussie activities should be encouraged and nurtured. With this in mind, we’ve put together a guide to keep your children and babies safe whilst playing in the sun.

How do I know I’m protecting my child’s skin from the sun?

Just like sunscreen lotions, clothes have a UPF rating. UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. This rating gives you an indication of how long it’s safe to stay out in the midday sun. As a guide, children with fair skin should have clothing with a UPF of 30 and for darker skins, around 20. It’s a good idea to ask your doctor if you’re not confident.

Australia’s safety standards for UV and kid’s sun hats

UV Standard 801 tests are the most rigorous. They test fabrics in realistic conditions such as wet, worn and stretched. Furthermore, they list the lowest UPF found, not the highest or average. You can check out their website here.

UV Protection Recommendations

Always remember the rule, ‘from 11 till 3, under the tree’. Because a baby’s skin is so much thinner and susceptible to sunburn, we don’t recommend any direct sun for the first year. After this, start increasing exposure slowly. Toddlers love to be out in the sun and it’s fine if they are suitable protected. This includes sunscreen, a suitable kid’s sun hat and suitably UPF rated long sleeved tops and pants. Finally, check the UV rating for that day on the BOM website here before you venture out.

We’re offering UPF tested babies and kid’s sun hats made by the high-quality Eco label Pickapooh. These products and durable, practical and provide a very high level of protection.
