How Organic Cotton Clothing Can Help Eczema

Eczema can be a real pain for your little ones. It usually manifests as an intensely itchy, red and flaky patch of skin. These patches may appear anywhere on the body, and you’ll notice a difference in the way it acts as your baby gets older. Unfortunately,  there isn’t a cure for eczema. However, better treatments are being developed all the time. At this stage, the best you can do is manage the flare-ups and identify ways to prevent them from happening. So, let’s have a look at how wearing organic cotton clothing can help reduce the effects of eczema.

Wearing Organic Cotton Clothing Can Help

Doctors recommend two main strategies to relieve the symptoms of eczema. First, buy clothing that minimises irritation to the skin. Second, avoid using harsh detergents and soaps. Fortunately, using organic products will dramatically improve both of these approaches. Organic cotton is softer and more breathable than ordinary cotton. Moreover, there are no nasty chemical residues in the fabric which have been shown to irritate delicate skin. On the other hand, cotton produced by non-organic farming methods can retain chemicals and pesticide residue that can cause irritation.

Be Safe and Avoid Synthetic Fibres

Synthetic fibres can cause rashes and itching. This is particularly true for infants suffering from eczema or allergies. Materials made from nylon, polyester and rayon are made using a noxious combination of toxic chemicals. If the skin is already broken because of eczema, these chemicals can cause irritation. Furthermore, synthetic fibres don’t breathe as well as organic cotton. As a result, sweat can build up and become another eczema trigger.

Organic Road to Recovery

Combining organic cotton clothing with a good natural eczema cream can usually calm a flare-up in less severe cases. But when a more serious treatment is necessary, consider locking in moisture by wrapping wet clothing over a layer of cream for an extended period. This is called wet-wrap therapy, and it’s beneficial for immediate relief, but it is not a permanent solution. For a permanent solution, consult your doctor and consider an elimination diet that focusses on healing the gut.
